WordPress 5.0 Update Notice
WordPress 5.0 / Gutenberg Update Notice
In the next major release (v 5.0), WordPress will be updating their visual editor tools under the core name Gutenberg. This update is a significant change to how the current WordPress works and may affect your current WordPress installation. WordPress is making this change to maintain its relevancy in the content management system marketplace and keep with current trends. Most notably, the new Gutenberg release works very well with mobile devices making using the visual editor using your mobile device much more user friendly.
For many WordPress users, this will simply be another core update and there will be no significant updates that need to occur other than spending some time with the new visual editor backend to get familiar with its features. But for a few WordPress users, this update will break their websites primarily in how the website is laid out or functions if it is uses tools that have not persisted with the new core update.
We will work with each of our WordPress customers to ensure this transition goes as smoothly as possible. Again, for many this will be a simple matter. For the few that need special attention, here is what you need to know:
Firstly, if you are a maintenance customer of Parker Web, we request that you allow us to handle these updates for you. If you do decide to implement these updates yourself, here is what you should know.
WordPress v.4.9.8 was released on August 2, 2018, with a pop-up option to upgrade to Gutenberg. BEFORE using this option, please make sure you have a full back up of your website so that if your website crashes, we can restore it. Please get with us if you want to be sure you have that back up in place.
WordPress v.5.0 is due to be released any day now and probably before the end of August. This core update will install Gutenberg as the default visual editor with an option to switch back to the classic editor. BEFORE updating the core to 5.0, please make sure you have a full back up of your website so that if your website crashes, we can restore it. Please get with us if you want to be sure you have that back up in place.
WordPress v.6.0 whose release date is not yet determined, will *only* have the new Gutenberg visual editor system. The finality of the v.6.0 release of Gutenberg places an imperative that any potential issues are resolved prior to the release of v.6.0. Again, if you do this update yourself, please make sure you have a full back up of your site.
If you are a maintenance customer of Parker Web, we are on task with these updates and will be reaching out to you as we progress through each stage. We will let you know if your site has any issues that will result from the Gutenberg updates. This notice is most important to those who may have significant issues that may result in unusual costs during these updates. We will identify those sites and reach out to those owners as we determine next steps. Feel free to reach out to us at any time.
